Here you will find a showcase of past projects I have been involved with, along with information on new projects which are underway. For each there are some notes on the nature of the work I contributed. British Library Books
Tales of the Weird
Series editor duties, commissioning and delivering every book from the first to the 74th. More general series info here, but some of the highlights included working with editors to hone their ideas and source the story selections, copy-editing new material, start-to-finish workflow management and collaborating with Mauricio Villamayor on the vibrant cover designs.
Realms of Imagination
I was the in-house editor for this expansive publication exploring the wide gamut of Fantasy writing. Working with Matthew Sangster and Tanya Kirk, I managed and edited contributions from twenty authors, provided art direction on the incredible bespoke illustrations from Sveta Dorosheva, and wrangled dragon’s hoard of images in collaboration with researcher Sally Nicholls and designer Ocky Murray.
Crime Classics
Series editor duties, working with consultant and author Martin Edwards to commission new titles, as well as diving into the Library collections to find oddities such as Murder After Christmas based on my own research. Lots and lots of delving into archives and making contact with the relatives of ‘lost’ authors, bringing their works back into print for the first time since their original publication. Researching cover art and designing the covers.
Gilded Nightmares
Series editor duties, including commissioning new titles, art direction, start-to-finish editorial workflow. Production management to ensure the reader received the fancier product this series promises, at an affordable price. I offered ‘Gilded Nightmares’ as one of a few different name options in 2024 to enhance their collective identity.
Shakespeare’s First Folio Facsimile
I worked with Nicola Denny, John Lee, Ocky Murray and many Library curators to bring this ambitious project to fruition. Creating an affordable and faithful facsimile of the Library’s copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio (for the 400th Anniversary of its publication) became a fiesta of creative solutions, endurance through complicated production setbacks and a lasting camaraderie.
Vietnam Documented
A rewarding project working as designer and typesetter to create a book from a popular blog about the Library’s Vietnamese collections, written by Sud Chonchirdsin.
Science Fiction Classics
Series editor duties, so commissioning new anthologies (from the unstoppable Mike Ashley), liaising with author estates, tracking down lost stories, researching cover images and frontispieces, as well as providing some of my own cover design work (see my fave, Nature’s Warnings).
The production gauntlet
At one point I was managing production on all of the fiction and non-fiction that British Library Publishing was printing (paperback, hardback, burst, sewn: all that goodness). Now my friends test me on gsm weights for papers out in the world, and I find myself tutting at printing decisions that probably aren’t worth tutting about.
Beyond the Library
Fiction in translation
Providing proofreading and translation editing for publishers including And Other Stories and Foundry Editions, as well as shoring up the early stages of some exciting translation projects yet to be announced.
James Bond graphic novels
Working with Ian Fleming Publications and consultant Mike Lake to produce comics series and standalone works including Aleš Kot’s The Body, Vargr, James Bond Origin and the graphic novel adaptation of Casino Royale by Van Jensen and Dennis Calero.
Copy-editing and proofreading
Collaborating with publishers including Hodder, Bloomsbury and Indigo Press on thought-provoking non-fiction, and authors on projects ranging through cosmic horror, fantasy and beyond.
Lost fiction projects
Works are in progress, to be announced when the stars align.
