That Which Wobbles is a creative space and blog by Jonny Davidson, who makes books and is based in Bristol. Its purpose is mainly for exploring art and (mostly) short fiction which is bristling with the capacity to wobble.
About Jonny
Jonny writes, researches, and makes all kinds of weird art, often circling around uncanny imagery and strange fiction. He created the British Library Tales of the Weird during his eight years at British Library Publishing, channelling a long-held fascination with strange and uncanny media into something that gained a life and following of its own.
For this work, and his role as series editor for the British Library Crime Classics and Gilded Nightmares series, editor and publisher Nicholas Royle listed him as one of “twelve individuals who do a great deal to support the short story in the UK” (Best British Short Stories 2025, Salt Publishing).
Having departed from the Library in 2025, he now works as an editor, researcher and designer for a range of publishers, printers and other organisations in the publishing industry. You can find contact details and more info on working with Jonny on your project here.
Why “wobble”?
I feel that “wobble” does a good job at conveying the notion of the involuntary response that good art (including writing) invites or demands of us. It wobbles, rocks, destabilises your current system of thoughts and feelings, often through fear, confusion, challenge; but also through overwhelming feelings of inspiration or hope. We get wobbled by ghost stories. We get wobbled by art which asks something of us and makes us think. The thing that wobbled us is that which wobbles.
Also, I sketched a haunted jelly when I was making notes about what this site could be, and I really enjoyed how it looked. If the jelly I had set overnight suddenly rose up from my platter in trembling animation, it would be wobbling in two senses – and I would most certainly be that which was wobbled. I think that which wobbles us in our day to day lives is perhaps even more interesting than the overt monsters of horror fiction, and the jellified food-turned-possible-enemy is a nice example of this more quotidian disaster.
